Are 24-month plans a good deal?
For many Texas customers, 24-month energy plans can be a great way to lock in a low electricity rate. This contract length is best suited for customers who don’t move around often and will likely live in the same place for at least two years. If you tend to move frequently or have a short-term living arrangement, a 24-month plan might not be the best option for you.
The main drawback to a 24-month plan is a potentially steep early termination fee (ETF). If you decide to cancel your contract before the 24 months are up, your provider will charge you a penalty (unless you move outside the service area). Your Electricity Facts Label (EFL) will explain any fees in your contract. Be sure to read this document before signing up to be prepared for any fees associated with your plan.
24-month energy plan FAQs
When is the best time to find cheap 24-month electricity plans?
To secure a long-term low electricity rate, search for energy plans in late fall or early spring. Texas electricity prices tend to decrease during these months due to mild temperatures and low demand. Our marketplace can help you compare rates in your area to determine the cheapest available. Enter your ZIP code to get started.
Are 24-month plans cheaper than 12-month plans?
Not necessarily. Currently on our marketplace, many 24-month electricity rates are the same as a 12-month option from the same provider. However, providers occasionally offer cheaper rates for long-term contracts. Enter your ZIP code and filter by price to find the cheapest rate. You can compare 12- and 24-month options to decide which plan is best for you.
How much is the early termination fee for 24-month plans?
Providers set a plan’s ETF, so each company’s policy will differ. Some providers charge a fee for each month remaining on your contract, while others have a set fine. Some ETFs for two-year plans can be as high as $295, so it is important to carefully read a plan’s details before signing up.
